ABOUT THIS COURSE

Figure drawing in charcoal and chalk

Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th April 2025

Schedule: 10am to 5pm.
Lunch: 1pm to 2pm

IIn this four-day course, we will be drawing the human figure from life in chalk and charcoal. This method has been traditionally taught over the years as fundamental practice for drawing and painting. As well as being a versatile and exciting medium in and of itself, charcoal allows us to focus on core principles such as anatomy, proportion, values and edges, which all underlie good painting practice. This can serve as an essential step for those wanting to begin painting, or a valuable exercise for experienced painters.

In the course, we will have the chance to observe the human figure in sustained poses and learn how to take a drawing from start to finish.

We will learn how to –

How to handle chalk and charcoal.

How to measure and structure at the start of the drawing.

General proportions of the human figure and how they apply to your drawing.

The basics of anatomy and how to use it in practice.

How to group values across the figure.

How to manipulate the background to enhance composition.

How to create form through edge control.

Creating a light impression.

The use of focal points and a path for the eye to travel around the drawing.

Creating interest and finding your individual style in your drawing.
